Final Project: How Synthetic Using Nature Can Still Be Considered Original And Natural

Updated: Jul 5, 2018

For this project, my team decided to research on plastics and why it can be considered natural.

Design of the outfit and the shirt:

T-Shirt Design:

We wanted to design different ocean animals that are affected by plastics onto our individual shirts and a mind map for the back of our shirts.

Basically, plastics used to be made from rubber. Today, most plastics are made with hydrocarbons from natural gas, oil and coal. These hydrocarbons are also known as polymers. But since plastics are affecting ocean life, we decided to use this topic to say that plastics are natural, but plastic pollution is not. We have to take the effort to not pollute our oceans and make sure the marine life is not being destroyed by plastics.

Tie-Dye of the Shirt:

We decided to tie-dye because the effect it gives looks like sea waves. The reason why we chose purple is because purple is a man-made color derived from squid ink. The color purple does not exist directly from nature. Thus it is a "synthetic" color.

Skirt:

The skirt is made from a blue garbage bag with a makeshift "belt" made from a strip of black garbage bag and seashells pasted on it.
